Drawing Restraints

“Drawing Restraints explores the absurdity inherent in motherhood by creating works inspired by famous pieces, recreated through the lens of parenthood.

Some examples are, “Little Lu Diptych” which explores a contemporary camera roll as throw away images in the style of Warhol prints. “Drawing Restraints” is a video performance nod to Matthew Barney exploring the double standard of art “training” vs. “obstacles” mother’s take on while being full time artists and parents. “Resting Energy” was influenced by Marina Ambromovic who had some famous opinions on being an artist and a mother. Being someone whose practice completely changed with parenthood, this interactive performance piece references the risk taking of parenting, along with the embarrassment and physicality needed to complete the tasks, and finishes with some footprints on the wall. “The Teeth (Buddha)” opened the door to the “Dust” project. This piece takes objects that are basically garbage to most, and elevates them as a readymade in the style of Duschamp, and turned golden absurdly changeing them to a sacred object or domestic household decor as a nod to Sherrie Levine.
